Assignment for Thursday October 10th

NOTE: You can complete this assignment on the blog, by hand, or type it to turn in.

Write TWO paragraphs responding to Anya Kamentetz's article, "You're 16, You're Beautiful, You're a Voter."

In your first paragraph, SUMMERIZE her MAIN ARGUMENT. Include an introduction of the author and text. Look at the verbs on p. 39-40 in They Say, I Say and use at least one of them in your paragraph.

In your second paragraph, describe one SUPPORTING ARGUMENT, EXAMPLE, ELABORATION or COMPARISON from the article and explain how it relates to the main argument. Look at the transitions from p. 109-110 in They Say, I Say and use at least one of them in your paragraph.

Don't include your own view here; do your best to understand hers, whether you agree or not.

If you still need to do your response to Johnson and Stevens, you can do so on the blog, by hand, or type it to turn in. You will still receive feedback and credit. I am best able to help you the more of your writing I see. See the post below for directions on that assignment.

  1. Anya Kamenetz argues that 16 year old teenagers should have more rights. Not specifically just one right but many rights such as the adults have. Rights like being able to vote to drinking and to marriage. She believes that "sixteen is a good starting point for phasing in adult rights and responsibilities". (Kamenetz). Teenagers being able to have more rights would help them think seriously about their future and also have opportunity to mature early enough for the upcoming years.
Furthermore, she also argues that "in reality, this is already when most people have their first jobs, their first drinks and their sexual initiations." (Kamenetz). Ultimately, "the more we treat teenagers as adults, the more they rise to our expectations." (Kamenetz). Anya Kamenetz considers that the law should give the chance to these teenagers freely and by their own choices instead of limiting them to make their own choices. To take a case in point, Anya Kamenetz believes that teenagers at the age of 16 should be given the chance to become mature and have their rights as they wish because she actually states that "surveys show that teenagers who drink at home with their families go on to drink less than those who sneak beers with friends." (Kamenetz). If the teens have the rights, they will become more mature at an early age and also affects their decisions from bad to good.

  2. The author believes that the more we treat teenagers as adults, the more they rise to our expectations. From her point of view she acknowledged that the age of 16 is the perfect age to start thinking seriously about life, having the right to vote, to drink, and the right to get married which will be motivated to young people at the age of 16. to carry the responsibility , also the qualification to driving which will help them to move forward and easily finding a job.

The author argues about government laws, which really affect the lives of young people at the age of 16 in a very negative way as she mentioned in the passage. She suggests that government should hasten the enfranchisement of this generation and the results will be great. For example, many states in the US have had success with a gradual phasing in of driving right over a year or more. Also government should assert not test young people at the age of 16 only, but to be able to test all ages in the nation. She reminded us by saying that the silver tsunami poses more of a threat than marauding teenagers ever did, as she emphasizes the right of young ages.

  3. Brandon: Good job: notice especially how you're using CAUSE and EFFECT to describe her arguments. Look at your last sentence: "If the teens have the rights, they will become more mature at an early age and also affects their decisions from bad to good." Read this aloud. How could you make it clearer?

  4. Abdul: Some good ideas here BUT be sure you use quotation marks and introduce your quotes when you use the exact words, even if it's only part of a sentence. For example, look at your last sentence. "She reminded us by saying that the silver tsunami poses more of a threat than marauding teenagers ever did, as she emphasizes the right of young ages." EITHER put this in your own words and make it clear OR introduce it as a direct quotation and explain. (We'll be talking more about direct quotation and you can find guidelines on in it in chapter 3 of They Say I Say.

  5. In thre article "you're 16, you're beautiful and you're a voter" by Anya Kamenetz she talks about her agrument that a 16 year old should have e ability to vote. she agree that legal age requirements should never stand alone. they should be flexible and pragmatic and paired with educational and congnitive requirements for the exercise of legal maturity. at the age 16 you can learn driving laws providing
the best model for combining early beginning and mandatory education. you can have a phasing in driving rights over a year or more with a learner's permit. sixteen is a good starting point for phasing in adult rights and responsibilities from voting to drinking to marriage. just like you have a first job their first drink and sexual initiations can happen at the age 16. studies show three fourth of high school seniors have drubk alcohol. surveys show the teenagers who drink at home with their families go on to drink less than those who sneak beers with friends. the more we treat teenagers as adults, the more they rise to our expectations. from development and vocational point of view, the late teens are the right starting point for young people to think seriously about their futures.

  6. Hi CJ: You're doing some good work to get at the essay's meaning here. BUT when you are summarizing (and not quoting directly), you want to be sure to be using YOUR OWN language - here you move back and forth between hers and yours and the result is confusing. Try to summarize while not looking at the essay and see what happens.
